Summary

Created in 1997, CPPIB is a federal non-agent Crown corporation responsible for managing the assets of the Canada Pension Plan in a way that maximizes returns without undue risk of loss. CPPIB operates independently of the CPP and at arm's length from the federal and provincial governments that are jointly responsible for the CPP. At December 31, 2008, CPPIB had net assets totaling $108.9 billion.
